Chris Mules of selk’bag New Zealand is a bit of a legend, and now officially on our sponsors page. In addition to giving us a bit of cash, he _also_ discounted aimee’s 4g Classic selk’bag!*
And so, may we present our photo gallery of aimee’s new favourite possession.
For those of you wondering to yourselves ‘what IS it?!’, well: selk’bags are, in essence, sleeping bags with Extra Added Utility. They have arms and legs, and depending on the model, other stuff too. aimee got the newest model, which is also rated for the coldest weather, and has a comfort rating of about 4 deg C**.
It’s got leg vents, and a belt at the ankles and hips, as well as the ability to stick one’s hands out of the ends of the sleeves (handy), and cool protective stuff on the feets, so that they don’t wear through. Huzzah! Perfect for getting about, having fun, and, of course, great for us restless sleeper-types :P
The name comes from the Selk’nam (meaning ‘men) nomads of Chile. They were tall, extremely hardy, and also very concerned with their appearance, relishing any opportunity to paint their bodies and faces. According to selk’bag:
Once, at the end of the 19th century, a researcher who was studying the Selk’nam saw one of their men naked in the snow, and asked why he wasn’t cold, stating that people should only leave their face uncovered. The Selk’nam replied: “I am all face”***.
Selk’bag Europe put out the below video on 10 reasons why one might want to use a selk’bags. It makes a few good points :)

* Dane refuses to get one, despite how cute he would look in one…
** We got proper down sleeping bags for the Gobi desert, as we can expect it to get VERY cold there.
*** Which is awesome, except when one doesn’t know where to put it… Also, it reminds aimee of a comment of hers earlier today, in which she proclaimed “I AM A GIANT AIMEE_FACED LEMUR :P”. Hooray for Facebook conversations :P
